Sustainable development has become the main objective of politic maker during the recent
decades. The world economy has changed profoundly and the economic activity is closely
related with environmental quality. The economic growth is one of many suspects contributing to
excessive rates of environmental degradation for a single developing country. This study
attempts to test the relationship between the environmental quality and economic development.
We go beyond the basic model of EKC by including other variables explanatory variables
energy consumption, population growth and trade openness. This study is the first of his kind for
Albania. To investigate the correlation among these variables we used the Ordinary Last Square
Method and Vector Error Correction Model. We find a cubic relationship between the CO2
emissions and economic growth. Furthermore, we identify that GDP and energy consumption
has a significant effect on CO2 emissions in the long-run and in the short-run. On the other
hand the population growth effect CO2 emission only in the short run. We suggest that these
specifications should be considered in implementing environmental regulations in Albania.
